Have Your Say: Planning Begins for the East Leg of the 144 Avenue North BRT

The City of Calgary is moving forward with plans for a new 144 Avenue North Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), which would extend rapid transit service from Centre Street to Saddletowne Circle in northeast Calgary. This study will look at route options, station locations, roadway improvements, walking, wheeling and cycling connections to stations, and key connections to the broader transportation network.

Building on what was heard during planning for the West Leg, Calgary Transit has developed a proposed plan for the East Leg - Phase 1, and is looking for feedback before it is finalized.

What Is the East Leg?

The 144 Avenue N BRT East Leg is the next step toward creating a continuous east-west rapid transit route across north Calgary. The proposed East Leg route was developed through technical analysis and informed by feedback gathered during the West Leg engagement.

The East Leg Functional Planning Study is expected to wrap up by the end of the year. The study will explore how to extend the route to more communities, strengthen transit connections, and support continued growth across north Calgary. Together, the East and West Leg studies will help make transit faster, more reliable, and better connected across the north end of the city.

Why This Matters:

The 144 Avenue N BRT is one of the key projects identified in RouteAhead, Calgary Transit's 30-year strategic plan approved by Council on July 4, 2023. RouteAhead guides the City's operating and capital investments to improve the transit customer experience, and it identified 144 Avenue N BRT as an important corridor to serve Calgary's rapidly growing north Calgary communities.

Once complete, the 144 Avenue N BRT will connect to the future Symons Valley Transit Terminal and act as a vital cross-town route - linking major transit lines including the Red Line LRT, Future Green Line LRT, Blue Line LRT, and the Shaganappi Primary Transit Network (PTN).

Through the broader Functional Planning Study of both East and West legs, the City will:

• Work with the public and key audiences to understand opportunities, constraints, needs, wants, concerns, and ideas

• Develop a preferred design for the 144 Ave N BRT corridor, including the route, station locations, transit access, transit priority measures, roads, and intersections

• Recommend a preferred design for the Symons Valley Terminal, ensuring efficient access for all modes of travel - walking, wheeling, cycling, driving, and transit

• Determine the phasing and cost of the project

Public engagement on the East Leg is open September 9 - October 2, 2026. Residents are invited to visit the online engagement portal to learn more and share feedback through the survey.

Additionally, Calgary Transit will be hosting several community pop-up events for residents to learn more and share their input in-person.
