Summer in Calgary is full of possibilities! Whether you're looking for programs for kids, activities the whole family can enjoy together, or something just for you, the City offers a variety of free, safe, supervised programs great for making new friends and learning new activities.
Parents can bring their children to supervised play opportunities, filled with field games, crafts, and engaging guest speakers. Youth can sharpen their leadership skills and critical thinking with the LEAD programs, and Calgarians of all ages can get active at mobile skate parks, exploring our wetlands, or join a guided nature walk.

In 2026 there are approximately 177 program offerings under nine different categories that Calgarians can choose from.

Last summer, over 17,000 people participated in our free summer programs.

It costs approximately $645K for Recreation & Social Programs to run free summer outdoor activities.

The City of Calgary aims to provide accessible and equitable recreation and social opportunities that improve quality of life, contribute to inclusive communities and support the social, mental and physical well-being of Calgarians. The free summer programs are designed to remove barriers to participation, resulting in fostering a welcoming environment for all. We want every individual, regardless of background or circumstance, to be able to fully engage, thrive and benefit from the programs and services we offer.
Do the programs run rain or shine?
No, outdoor activities are weather dependent and may be cancelled in the event of severe weather, extreme temperatures or poor air quality. Participants are encouraged to contact 311 if they are uncertain about weather cancellations or visit calgary.ca/free for updates.
How does The City decide where to offer free programs?
Community selection is based on the availability of indoor space that can be quickly and easily accessed in case of inclement weather changes, program specific outdoor site needs, partner requests and demand from previous years
How do these programs align with GamePLAN - the City's recreation strategy?
Free summer programs provide Calgarians of all ages and background the opportunity to access recreation while reducing the barrier of cost and meeting Calgarians right in their communities. These welcoming, fun and active programs align directly with our action to expand free drop-in opportunities for children and youth as part of our efforts to level the playing field in public recreation.
