Active & Safe Routes to School: 2026 Speed Cushion & Speed Hump Pilot

Getting kids to school safely is a priority for our community, and the Active and Safe Routes to School  (ASRS) program is here to help.

In partnership with Ever Active Schools (EAS), ASRS is designed to increase the number of students using active and sustainable ways to get to school, working to identify and solve transportation and traffic safety challenges that many school communities face every day.

Recognizing the Issues

If you've ever dropped off or picked up a child at school, you know how hectic it can get. ASRS aims to tackle some of the most common safety concerns in school zones, including:

  • Traffic congestion at pickup and drop-off times

  • Jaywalking by students and families

  • Distracted drivers, pedestrians, and wheelers

  • Limited parking and illegal driver behaviours such as double parking, stopping in crosswalks, or U-turns

  • Cars idling in drop-off zones

  • Concerns about students travelling independently

2026 Speed Cushion & Speed Hump Pilot

As part of the 2026 pilot, three areas around several Ward 3 schools have been identified as locations for speed cushion and speed hump installations. These traffic calming measures are intended to help keep kids safe and improve overall road safety for everyone travelling in and around the school areas.
