Calgary Transit Express Route Changes: What Ward 3 Needs to Know

During recent budget discussions, it was noted that Calgary Transit is planning the phase out the City’s remaining express bus routes as part of its updated RouteAhead plan. Express services currently operate on ten routes citywide, including six that serve Ward 3. These routes provide limited-stop service between residential areas and downtown but are largely a legacy of Calgary’s earlier, smaller city structure and are not provided consistently across neighbourhoods. Calgary Transit also reports that these routes consistently have some of the lowest ridership in the system.

As part of a broader rebalancing of transit resources, Calgary Transit is shifting service toward areas with higher demand and communities currently underserved during off-peak hours. Many express routes overlap with base services, so riders generally have alternative options even after express routes are removed. Service levels in affected areas will also be adjusted to maintain or improve overall coverage and efficiency.

For Ward 3, the North Central Transit Service Review (TSR) is scheduled to begin in 2026, giving residents the opportunity to take part in a comprehensive look at how transit can better serve the area. The goal is to align services with RouteAhead by expanding two-way all-day service, moving away from bespoke express routes, and creating more equitable service and capacity across North Central Calgary. This consultation is expected to take place before any express routes serving Ward 3 are retired.

North Central Calgary has some of the highest transit ridership in the city, with many routes already running beyond capacity. Before any express routes are phased out, it’s essential that the 301/MAX Green BRT be fully built out with increased capacity and more frequent service to meet current demand. Councillor Yule is strongly advocating for an expedited rollout of these upgrades to ensure reliable service for commuters and to help Ward 3’s transit network keep pace with growth. Calgary Transit recognizes that without these investments, retiring express routes would only increase pressure on an already overburdened system and worsen overcrowding.

Our office will continue to share updates with residents as new details and timelines are confirmed.
