New Fair Entry Partnership Helps Residents Access Essential Medications

A new partnership between The City of Calgary and GreenShield will help eligible Calgarians access essential prescription medications at no cost.
Through a new pilot program, residents who qualify through The City’s Fair Entry program can be referred to GreenShield’s Essential Medicines Program, which provides select prescription medications free of charge for up to 12 months. The initiative is designed to support individuals who do not have private or public prescription drug coverage.
By using the Fair Entry program as the referral pathway, the partnership makes it easier for eligible residents to access medication without navigating an additional application process. The program builds on Fair Entry’s existing role as the City’s single point of access for a range of fee assistance and subsidy programs.
GreenShield launched its Essential Medicines Program in 2023 to help Canadians without prescription drug coverage access the medications they need. Since then, the program has supported more than 11,000 people across Canada and helped fill more than 16,000 prescriptions.
Who may be eligible?
To qualify, residents must:
Be approved through The City’s Fair Entry program.
Not have private or public prescription drug coverage.
Meet the eligibility requirements of GreenShield’s Essential Medicines Program.
The City currently has approximately 130,000 Calgarians enrolled in Fair Entry. This partnership expands the supports available through the program and helps remove financial barriers to essential medications for residents who need them most.
