Illegal Dumping Hurts Communities - Let’s Work Together to Stop It

Illegal dumping isn’t just unsightly, it’s harmful to our neighbourhoods. Whether it’s furniture left in an alley, garbage tossed beside a park, or construction debris dumped on vacant land, these actions damage our environment, attract pests, and create safety hazards. In Ward 3, we've seen a few instances where this issue has become more visible, and it's time to take action together.
Many people don’t realize that illegal dumping is a serious offence under Calgary’s Community Standards Bylaw. Anyone caught dumping waste illegally can face fines of up to $10,000.
The cost of cleaning up illegal dumping often falls on the City or by private property owners. While this is frustrating, there are steps property owners can take to help reduce the risk of dumping on their land. These include securing fences and gates, keeping areas well lit, posting “No Dumping” signage, and installing security cameras to deter and document illegal activity. In some cases, video footage has helped Peace Officers identify offenders and issue fines.
There are also legal and easy ways to dispose of waste properly. Residents can use City landfills, book large item pickups, or take part in free, seasonal Community Cleanup events. Visit calgary.ca/dumping or calgary.ca/whatgoeswhere to explore these options.
If you see illegal dumping, please help by reporting it to 311. Your report helps the City respond quickly and keeps our community tidy and safe.
