Neighbourhood Speed Limits: Updates Coming to Ward 3

In an effort to reduce fatalities and serious injuries on our road network, in 2021, the City of Calgary began lowering speed limits on qualifying residential streets. The results were clear: slower speeds resulted in fewer severe collisions and safer transportation corridors for all road users.
Lower Speed Limits Coming to Select Collector Roads
As part of the City’s Vision Zero commitment to reduce serious and fatal collisions, this work is being expanded. Under the new framework, speed limits on some collector roads and community entrances will be lowered to 40 km/h when the road design supports slower driving and traffic data confirms drivers are already travelling below the current posted speed.
Studies show that even small reductions in speed make a difference. A one per cent reduction in average speed can lead to:
a 2% reduction in all collisions
a 3% reduction in injury collisions
a 4% reduction in fatal collisions
Lower speeds also help people feel safer and more comfortable getting around their community, whether they are walking, cycling, or driving.
As part of this work, several Ward 3 locations have been identified as appropriate roads for this change. The goal is simple: make roads safer for everyone who uses them, especially pedestrians, cyclists, and other vulnerable road users, while keeping speed limits predictable and consistent with how people actually drive.
How Roads Are Selected
Not every road qualifies for a lowered speed limit. Mobility looks at things like:
How fast people are actually driving: recorded vehicle speeds compared against the posted limit to determine where actual driving conditions warrant a change.
What's happening along the road: things like driveways, schools, parks, apartment buildings close to the curb, or on-street parking all mean more people are crossing paths with traffic, which raises the case for a lower limit.
Consistency: speed limits that jump up and down along the same street confuse drivers and reduces compliance. So changes are made corridor by corridor, not block by block.
Residents will soon start to see updated signage on a few collector roads approved for speed reduction. Existing 50 km/h signs will be replaced with 40 km/h signs, with changes rolling out through the end of 2026.
