Another busy week at City Hall, pushing forward some key priorities for Ward 3. Here’s a quick look at what we’ve been working on.
Following two tragic pedestrian fatalities over the Family Day long weekend, we need urgent action to make our streets safer. During Tuesday’s Public Hearing, I asked Mayor Farkas for an update on our advocacy efforts with the provincial government to restore photo radar enforcement. Since the province banned photo radar on all provincial roads and prohibited the use of intersection safety devices last year, instances of dangerous driving have surged across Calgary. It has also left a $28 million shortfall in the Calgary Police budget. Restoring photo radar and dedicating the revenue to traffic safety (upgrading crosswalks, improving intersections, protecting school zones, and implementing traffic calming measures) would go a long way in helping us expedite some of these critical life-saving improvements. As it stands, we are currently waiting on a reply from the province for this request.
Members of the Prairie Economic Gateway Committee met with the Honourable Steven MacKinnon, Canada’s Minister of Transportation and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, and Alberta Municipal Affairs Minister Dan Williams to discuss regional priorities and long-term economic opportunity. Together with Rocky View County, we reinforced the importance of the Prairie Economic Gateway partnership and the value of strong collaboration across governments to position Calgary, the Prairies, and Canada to grow and compete.
I was grateful for the chance to chat with the curious and engaged Grade 5 students from Coventry Hills School during their visit to City Hall. They came with thoughtful questions about what it’s like to be a councillor, how young people can be good stewards of their community, ways to improve pedestrian safety, what’s being done to make transit better, and even some big ones about Alberta separation and remaining part of Canada. The future looks bright!
Friday evening my team and I attended Friends of Chinatown’s Big Fun Chinese New Year. It was an incredible evening of delicious food, amazing company, and big celebration of tradition, connection, and generosity.
We also got word that the City is moving forward with planned reinforcement repairs to nine segments of the existing Bearspaw South Feeder Main (BSFM) pipe. This work will support operations and stability of the pipe, but will also come with a period of water restrictions beginning March 9, expected the last approximately four weeks. You can read more about this announcement HERE.
Looking ahead, we’re in the process of organizing another Ward 3 Town Hall to talk about city-wide rezoning. More details to come very soon, but for now, please pencil us in for the evening of March 19th at Vivo. (If you'd like to be notified when the event details are posted, feel free to sign up for the Ward 3 Newsletter)
