Country Hills Towne Centre Storm Pond: Sediment Removal Resumes

ree

The City of Calgary is resuming work to remove sediment from the Country Hills Towne Centre storm pond, located west of Coventry Hills Blvd NE and north of Country Hills Blvd NE. This important project helps reduce flooding risk in our communities, enhances stormwater treatment, and safeguards the health of our rivers and streams for both residents and wildlife.

Why This Work is Happening:

The storm pond, built in 1998, captures and holds stormwater, slowing the flow to allow sediments and contaminants to settle before water returns to our waterways. Over time, sediment has accumulated, reducing the pond’s capacity to store and treat water. Removing the sediment will restore the pond’s full storage and treatment capacity, which is especially critical during heavy storms.

Work on sediment removal began in January 2024, but unforeseen factors delayed completion. The project will now resume in mid-November 2025 and is expected to be finished by the end of March 2026, weather permitting. Work has been scheduled to avoid disrupting nesting birds.

What to Expect During Construction

Residents may notice some changes around the pond while work is underway:

  • Lower water levels and temporary odours: As the pond drains, organic material may produce a smell. This is normal and will dissipate quickly.

  • Pathway closures and temporary fencing: Work areas will be fenced for public safety. Portions of the pathway will be closed, with signage to guide the public.

  • Increased truck traffic and equipment noise: Excavators will remove sediment, and trucks will transport it off-site. Generator and equipment noise will comply with Community Standards Bylaw limits.

A partial draining of the pond will begin in mid-November. Sediment will first be removed from the west forebay, then from the east forebay once the pond is fully drained. Restoration work is planned for early May 2026, including topsoil replacement, seeding, and any necessary pathway repairs.
